“BMW and Mercedes-Benz Forge Alliance to Develop Extensive EV Charging Infrastructure in China”

Extensive EV Charging Infrastr1

Two prominent automotive manufacturers, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, have joined forces in a collaborative effort to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in China. This strategic partnership between BMW Brilliance Automotive and Mercedes-Benz Group China aims to address the increasing demand for EVs by establishing a comprehensive charging network throughout the country.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz have announced a 50:50 joint venture to develop an extensive EV charging network in China, the largest market for both companies. By leveraging their expertise in global and Chinese charging operations, as well as their understanding of the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) market, the collaboration intends to build a robust charging infrastructure.

The joint venture aims to establish a network of at least 1,000 high-power charging stations, equipped with approximately 7,000 high-power charging piles, by the end of 2026. This ambitious plan will provide widespread access to fast and efficient charging options for EV owners across China.

Regulatory approval will be sought for the joint venture’s operations, and the first charging stations are expected to be operational in 2024. The initial focus will be on regions with high NEV adoption rates, with subsequent expansion nationwide to ensure comprehensive coverage.

The premium charging network will be accessible to the general public, offering a seamless charging experience. Additionally, BMW and Mercedes-Benz customers will enjoy exclusive features, including plug & charge functionality and online reservation, enhancing their convenience and user experience.

Sustainability is a key focus for the joint venture, and efforts will be made to procure electricity from renewable sources wherever possible. This commitment to eco-friendly charging aligns with the companies’ goals of reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable mobility.

China’s growing interest in new energy vehicles has resulted in the world’s largest charging network. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, EV and plug-in hybrid deliveries from January to October 2023 accounted for 30.4% of total new car sales, reaching 7.28 million units.

To cater to the increasing demand for EV charging, major automakers such as Volkswagen and Tesla have been establishing their own charging networks. Tesla, for instance, recently opened its charging network in China to non-Tesla electric vehicles, aiming to support the wider EV ecosystem.

In addition to automakers, traditional oil companies in China, such as China National Petroleum Corp and China Petrochemical Corp, have also entered the EV charging sector, recognizing the potential of this market.

The collaboration between BMW Brilliance Automotive and Mercedes-Benz Group China represents a significant step towards enhancing the EV charging infrastructure in China. By leveraging their combined resources and expertise, these renowned automotive brands are poised to contribute to the growth of electric mobility in the country, supporting the transition to a greener transportation ecosystem.

The joint venture between BMW and Mercedes-Benz signifies a significant advancement in the development of EV charging infrastructure in China. By combining their knowledge and resources, these automotive giants aim to establish a comprehensive charging network that will facilitate the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. As China continues its transition towards sustainable transportation, this collaboration will play a crucial role in shaping the future of electric mobility and supporting the country’s environmental goals.
