First electric vehicle charging station funded by Biden infrastructure law opens

According to foreign media reports, the U.S. government said on December 11 that the first electric vehicle charging station funded by a $7.5 billion project funded by the White House has been put into use in Ohio.

Automakers and others have repeatedly said that a significant increase in electric vehicle charging stations will be critical to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

The White House said Ohio has opened its first charging station near Columbus, and new charging stations have broken ground in Vermont, Pennsylvania and Maine.

All 50 states in the United States have developed plans to build electric vehicle infrastructure, and the White House said that “many states have begun issuing proposals or awarding installation contracts.”

The White House’s goal is to expand the nationwide charging network to 500,000 stations, including high-speed charging stations on the busiest highways and interstates, with stations no more than 50 miles apart. ).

Funding for the construction of charging stations comes from the US$1 trillion infrastructure law enacted by the United States in 2021. U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said that the commissioning of the first charging station is an important step in “creating a convenient, economical, and reliable electrified transportation system.”

More than two years after the passage of the 2021 Infrastructure Act, charging stations are still not in use, a fact that Republicans in Congress have recently been exploiting. Last week, the Republican-led House of Representatives voted to bar the Biden administration from advancing tough auto emissions rules that would see 67% of new car sales come from electric vehicles by 2032, a move that prompted a veto threat from the White House.

The White House said that as of December, there were more than 165,000 public charging piles in the United States, and the number of public fast charging piles has increased by more than 70% since the Biden administration took office.

Biden set a goal in 2021 to have 50% of the country’s annual new car sales come from pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids by 2030, with the support of automakers.
