International Atomic Energy Agency calls for strengthening nuclear power plant safety protection

Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, located in Ukraine, is one of the largest nuclear power plants in Europe. Recently, due to the continued turmoil in the surrounding area, the safety issues of this nuclear power plant have attracted widespread attention from the international community. Under the call of Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), all parties should exercise maximum restraint to ensure the safe and stable operation of nuclear power plants.

Director General Grossi issued a statement on February 21, local time, urging all parties to strictly abide by the five specific principles he proposed at the United Nations Security Council last May. The five principles include: refraining from any form of attack on a nuclear power plant, especially against reactors, spent fuel storage, other critical infrastructure or personnel; ensuring the personal safety of nuclear power plant workers; and avoiding any attacks that may affect the safety and security of a nuclear power plant. or military activities; respect the neutrality of nuclear power plants; and strengthen international cooperation to jointly address the safety challenges of nuclear power plants.

In the statement, Grossi emphasized that the personal safety of workers at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant must be protected at all times, which is the basis for ensuring the normal operation of the nuclear power plant. At the same time, all parties should work together to avoid any attacks or military actions that may threaten the safety and security of nuclear power plants. This is not only about the security of Ukraine, but also about the stability of the entire region and global nuclear security.

Director General Grossi’s appeal stems from the current tensions surrounding the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. In recent years, conflicts have continued in the region, which has caused concern about the safety of nuclear power plants. Once a safety accident occurs, it will not only have a serious impact on Ukraine, but even the entire European region. Global nuclear security will also face huge challenges.

In this context, Director General Grossi’s call is particularly important. All parties should actively respond to this initiative and work together to maintain the security and stability of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant and ensure that this critical infrastructure is not affected by military conflicts. At the same time, the international community should strengthen cooperation and provide necessary technical support and assistance for the safe operation of nuclear power plants.
