“Raizen and BYD Partner to Install 600 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Across Brazil”

Brazil1

In a significant development for Brazil’s electric vehicle (EV) market, Brazilian energy giant Raizen and Chinese automaker BYD have announced a strategic partnership to deploy a vast network of 600 EV charging stations across the country. This initiative aims to meet the increasing demand for charging infrastructure and accelerate the adoption of electric mobility in Brazil.

The charging stations will operate under the Shell Recharge brand and will be strategically positioned in eight major cities, including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and six other state capitals. The installation of these stations is planned over the next three years, with an emphasis on high-traffic areas and key metropolitan regions. This comprehensive network of charging infrastructure will provide EV owners with convenient and accessible charging options, addressing a critical requirement for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

Raizen, a joint venture between Shell and Brazilian conglomerate Cosan, is set to play a pivotal role in steering the growth of the charging station segment in Brazil. With an ambitious target of capturing 25 percent of the market share, Raizen aims to leverage its extensive experience in the energy sector to drive the development and operation of these charging stations. By collaborating with BYD, a leading global player in the electric vehicle industry, Raizen can benefit from BYD’s expertise in EV technology and charging solutions.

Ricardo Mussa, the Chief Executive of Raizen, highlighted Brazil’s unique energy transition and the strong foundation the country has in hybrid and ethanol vehicles. He emphasized that Brazil is well-positioned for the adoption of electric vehicles due to its existing infrastructure and expertise in alternative fuel solutions. The partnership with BYD aligns with Raizen’s commitment to sustainable mobility and reinforces its dedication to driving the energy transition in Brazil.

BYD, known for its innovative EV offerings, has witnessed impressive growth in the Brazilian market. In 2023, electric vehicle sales in Brazil experienced a remarkable 91 percent surge compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 94,000 vehicles sold. BYD played a significant role in this growth, with its sales accounting for 18,000 electric cars. By collaborating with Raizen and expanding the charging infrastructure, BYD aims to further bolster its presence in the Brazilian market and support the transition to electric mobility.

The partnership between Raizen and BYD marks a major milestone in the development of Brazil’s EV charging infrastructure. By establishing a substantial network of charging stations, the collaboration addresses a crucial barrier to EV adoption and provides a strong foundation for the future growth of electric mobility in the country. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, this joint effort will contribute to reducing emissions, enhancing energy sustainability, and shaping a greener transportation landscape in Brazil.
